August 17: in 1994, David Caruso quits “NYPD Blue” to star in movies nobody will really care about.
August 18: in 1986, “Webster” costar and “$25,000 Pyramid” whiz Henry Polic II gets to host his own ABC game show, “Double Talk,” with contestants and their celebrity teammates each deciphering a hunk of hyperbole to combine the words and create common phrases. Kicking things off on the debut show are “General Hospital’s” Stuart Damon and the queen of TV games, Betty White.
August 19: in 1950, ABC becomes the first network to give kids something to watch on Saturday mornings with the debuts of “Animal Clinic,” starring veterinarian Wesley Young, and “Acrobat Ranch,” live from Chicago with host Jack Stillwell, who puts his youthful audience through their paces with various stunts and games.
August 20: in 1990, not believing the musical is dead, both ABC (“Cop Rock”) and NBC have singing authority figures in their fall lineups. NBC’s lands with a thud first on this date, with the teachers and students of “Hull High” getting down and funky in the hallways. While eight episodes of the Kenny Ortega directed-and-choreographed series are filmed, only six ever air, with audiences preferring to have their lunch ladies slinging hash rather than singing it.
August 21: in 1994, HBO gets its highest ratings ever when 11 million people tune in to “Barbra Streisand — The Concert.” The special earns a total of five Emmy Awards, matching the Emmy achievements of her first TV special, the one-woman show “My Name Is Barbra,” exactly 30 years before.
August 22: in 1993, Fox answers the burning question: What happened to Tootie? Well, Kim Fields is back, and she Queen Latifah, Kim Coles, and Erika Alexander are all “Living Single.”
August 23: in 1990, “Ferris Bueller” falls in love with transfer student Sloan Petersen in the first episode of this prequel sitcom on NBC. While NBC has the official character names from the John Hughes flick, Fox’s similar “Parker Lewis Can’t Lose” proves more successful. “Ferris” is off the schedule by January, its place taken by “Blossom.” Most of the cast land on their feet: Ferris (Charlie Schlatter) winds up on “Diagnosis: Murder,” sister Jeannie (Jennifer Aniston) becomes a Friend, and director Bill Bixby gets work on “Blossom.”
